Hazel Park High School (HPHS) Initiative

This AYE initiative is dedicated to challenging and empowering students, volunteers and, staff to create Dr. King’s Beloved Community which is a “…global vision in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood.’

AYE partners with Hazel Park High School and Challenge Day with the common purpose of recognizing social oppression and fostering respect, acceptance and compassion within the Hazel Park High School for all students.  Challenge Day and the weekly Empowerment Zone (EZone) is a:

  • safe place for students can come and talk about topics relevant to their lives. “We have conversations in EZone we can’t have in school.” HPHS student,;
  • place where students will be supported and empowered to live their best lives, and
  • students create an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood through rrespect, acceptance and compassion. Bullying and all forms of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice are replaced by an all-inclusive love and support.
